Packing

What should I use to pack? Boxes, bins, bags?

If you need boxes, we provide StorageForStudents boxes, saving you a trip to the store and extra costs. If you order the bundle deals, we will contact you to ensure you receive the proper number of boxes if required. While we recommend using our boxes for maximum protection, we also accept any secure container—bins with lids, duffle bags, suitcases, etc. Items that do not fit into a packing receptacle will be billed as out-of-box items. We do not recommend using trash bags since they will tear easily and be considered out-of-box items.

Can I use my own boxes?

Yes! Alongside using your own boxes, you can also us our StorageForStudents boxes, provided free of charge.

Please note that store-bought moving boxes may not be adequate for shipping and storage purposes. If you choose to use or purchase your own boxes, be sure to follow our labeling instructions carefully.

For more details on the cost differences between StorageForStudents boxes and other packing options, please review our pricing page.

How do I get StorageForStudent boxes?

After reviewing our pricing page, you may purchase the StorageForStudents Standard Box which will be received by our system. Once that order is placed, we will contact the students and drop-off the necessary number of boxes. If a student buys a bundle option, then the student can email us requesting a certain number of boxes and we will drop those off to the student for them to begin packing.

What fits in a box?

Our boxes provide ample space for a wide variety of student belongings. The StorageForStudents box measures 18"x18"x18." They provide the perfect size to store a wide range of items without causing strain. Here are a few examples of items to pack:

  • Bedroom essentials like bedding, toiletries, pillows, and wall art
  • Kitchen and clothing items, such as a Nespresso machine, winter sweaters, and bath towels
  • Multiple pairs of footwear, including sneakers, boots, and sandals
  • Household items like a blender, bedside lamps, blankets, and even silverware

This optimal capacity ensures your belongings are safely stored while keeping your moving process as efficient and hassle-free as possible.

Ensure that the box is still capable of being properly secured and taped. Damaged or overpacked boxes will be addressed by the team if noticed at pickup.

What supplies are provided?

If you purchase the StorageForStudents Standard Box or a bundle and request a Standard Box, you will receive:

  • Box (18x18x18 inches)

  • StorageForStudents Label

If you need extra supplies, you may purchase your own or reach out to StorageForStudents for advice.

Our team takes great care in protecting and storing your belongings, and in the event that your items are lost or damaged, they are covered by our complimentary insurance of $100 per item. • $100 additional insurance – +$2/month per item
  • $300 additional insurance – +$3/month per item
  • $500 additional insurance – +$5/month per item

If you have further questions, make sure to email us!

Do you have any packing tips?

The most important focus for StorageForStudents is protecting and securing your belongings. Therefore, packing is extremely important in order to protect your belongings. During transportation, shocks received on the outside of the box can pass through to the contents, causing damage.

Considerations for when you pack your boxes or items for storage:

Use the original boxes to pack computers and other electronics. They are the correct size, and the original packing materials, if kept, will help ensure the safety of the contents.

Use plastic wrap, towels, blankets, newspapers, or clothes to pack fragile items such as picture frames, mugs, alarm clocks, etc.

Please make certain that items in the boxes are secure enough to not move around inside. Use clothing, towels, blankets, or crumpled newspaper to fill open spaces.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PACK THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT SHIP OR STORE WITH STORAGE SCHOLARS BECAUSE WE DO NOT INSURE THEM AGAINST LOSS OR DAMAGE:

Jewelry, coins, cash, and collectibles.

Items of intangible or intrinsic value.

Improperly packed items, including furniture that is not adequately wrapped.

Food items

Liquids

DISTRIBUTE WEIGHT EVENLY:

To avoid over-stressing the boxes (and our hardworking student workers), we suggest that you separate your heavy items into multiple boxes. This will prevent breaking boxes and breaking backs.

Don’t put all of your books in the same box.

Mix books with lighter items such as sweaters and bedding. This is also a good way to keep your books in good condition.

It is also a good idea to place the heavier objects as close to the center of the box as possible to reduce the risk of breaking the box.

The maximum allowed weight for any box will be 40 pounds. Thoughtful packing will reduce the risk of damage and save you money!

Perishable items are not allowed at all!!!

Can I store all of my items in trash bags?

We do not recommend using trash bags for storage as they can easily rip, leading to damaged or lost items. If you do store your items in trash bags, they will be classified as a similarly sized item on our pricing list under the "out-of-box" section and be charged as such.

For better protection, consider using one of these alternatives:

  • Plastic totes
  • StorageForStudents boxes
  • Other quality boxes
  • Suitcases
  • Trunks
  • Garment bags
  • Ikea Bag
  • Home Depot hard tote

Please note that any damage to items stored in trash bags will void all insurance coverage.

Do you provide packing services?

At the moment, StorageForStudents does not offer any type of packing services to students.

How to pack TV, Monitors, Fridges, Computers, Microwaves, Rug, Lamps, Futons/Couches?

When packing these items, proper care is essential to protect them during transit and storage. Here are some detailed guidelines:

  • TVs and Monitors:

- Always pack TVs and monitors in their original boxes or in boxes specifically designed for these items.

- Avoid mixing electronics with other items to prevent damage from vibrations and shifting objects.

- Note that if a TV or monitor is left unpacked at pickup, any insurance coverage (including the complimentary $100 per item) will be forfeited.

  • Computers (Desktops and Laptops):

- Use the original packaging or a box designed to secure these items.

- Do not place them in boxes with other objects.

- For higher-value electronics, consider purchasing additional insurance, as our complimentary coverage is limited.

  • Fridges:

- Unplug and leave the fridge doors open for at least 48 hours before your move-out date to ensure it is fully defrosted and dry.

- Wipe it down with a clean towel, secure the cord by taping it behind the coils, and fasten any drawers or shelves to prevent shifting.

- Failure to properly defrost may incur additional handling fees, and if ice or condensation remains, a $50 defrosting fee will apply.

  • Microwaves:

- Remove the glass tray and pack it securely using a blanket, towel, or bubble wrap.

- Pack the microwave with other non-fragile items, ensuring it is well-cushioned.

  • Rugs:

- Roll your rug tightly and secure it with tape in at least three places.

- Wrap it in plastic if you wish to protect it from dust.

- Do not tape multiple rugs together.

  • Lamps:

- Remove all light bulbs and wrap them separately in bubble wrap.

- Wrap both the lampshade and the base with bubble wrap, and pack them in a box with minimal open spaces to prevent shifting.

- Avoid packing heavy or bulky items in the same box as your lamp.

- If a lamp is too large for a box, remove the bulb, wrap it securely, and be aware that it will be billed as an out-of-box item by cubic foot.

  • Futons/Couches:

- For futons, if they come in multiple pieces, note that each piece may be billed separately.

- Ensure that all furniture items are disassembled or broken down as required before pickup.

By following these packing tips, you can help ensure that your valuable and fragile items remain protected throughout the moving and storage process.

How do I label my boxes?

For StorageForStudents boxes and other items, make it simple to identify each box. Just write your name, order number, and item number (for example, 1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc.) on each label so that we can easily track your boxes and furniture. Label will either be provided in stickers or you will be able to print them on paper.

If you choose to pack your belongings in your own boxes, please label everything clearly and in large writing using a sharpie or a similar marker. Be sure to include the following information:

  • Your full name (as provided on your account)
  • Your order number
  • Your phone number
  • The item number (for example, 1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc.)
  • A description of the contents, so we know to take extra care with fragile items

You can also print our StorageForStudents labels directly from our website for added convenience.

How much weight do StorageForStudent boxes hold?

Our StorageForStudents boxes are designed to safely hold up to 30 lbs each. To ensure the security of your items during storage and transport, please make sure that no box exceeds this weight limit.

Tips to prevent overweight boxes:

  • Even Distribution: Spread heavier items across several boxes to avoid overloading any single box.
  • Use Padding: Fill gaps with appropriate padding—such as clothing, towels, or bubble wrap—to secure items and minimize movement.
  • Weigh Your Boxes: To estimate a box’s weight, step on a scale and note your weight, then hold the box and step on the scale again. Subtract your weight from the total to get an approximate weight for the box.

Following these guidelines helps maintain the integrity of the boxes and ensures safe handling of your belongings.

Pick-Up

When will my movers arrive?

All pickups occur between 9 AM and 6 PM on your scheduled day. Our movers will call or text you when they’re on their way, so please ensure you provide a domestic phone number. You’ll receive an estimated time window via email 72 hours prior to your pickup, based on your position along our predetermined route.

Please note that these time windows are estimates; shorter time windows are not available due to potential unforeseen delays and high move volumes.

If you’re not available during the scheduled window, please either arrange for a reliable person to drop your items off or consider rescheduling.

Can I have a shorter pick-up windown?

Shorter pickup windows are not offered because unforeseen delays—such as inclement weather, flat tires, or other unexpected issues—can affect our schedule. We strive to communicate any delays as soon as they occur and provide text updates periodically. Our routes are designed for maximum efficiency, so if you are unavailable during the provided time, please arrange for a trustworthy proxy to be present on your behalf or consider rescheduling for another day (note that additional fees may apply for last-minute changes or non-complimentary dates).

You don't need to wait in your room; simply be nearby and ready to meet the moving team when you receive notification that they are on their way.

Can you pick up at an off-campus location?

Yes! We can pick up your items from an off-campus location within a 3-mile radius of your campus at no additional cost on our complimentary pickup dates.

If your location is beyond 3 miles from campus, please contact our customer service team so we can coordinate with our logistics team to determine if your pickup is feasible. Additional fees may apply for extended-distance pickups.

Do movers come to my room to retrieve the items?

At most universities, our movers will come directly to your room to pick up your items! However, due to campus restrictions or parking limitations, some schools require curbside pickups. If your school falls under this category, you will need to meet our movers outside your residence hall to retrieve a dolly or hand truck and bring your items down to them. An example is visiting hours for universities that must be adhered to.

We will provide specific instructions regarding your school’s pickup process in advance, so be sure to check your email for updates. If you have any questions about your pickup location, feel free to reach out to our customer service team for clarification.

Should I leave the day of my pick-up?

We strongly recommend that you do not make travel arrangements for the same day as your scheduled pickup unless you have a trusted proxy available to meet our movers on your behalf.

Unforeseen delays such as inclement weather, heavy traffic, or campus congestion can cause pick-ups to occur later than expected, which could result in missed flights or other travel complications. Similarly, if your return travel is delayed, you may miss your scheduled pick-up time, requiring rescheduling and potential additional fees.

To avoid these issues, consider staying with a friend or booking a hotel for the night after your pickup. If you must leave, email us the name of the proxy who will oversee the pickup in your absence.

Important: If assigning a proxy, ensure their contact information is up to date. They must be available to answer calls or texts and be present at the pickup location during the assigned time. Make sure to email us!

What if the pick-up window does not work or if I am not available during the pick-up window?

If you are unavailable during your scheduled pick-up window, you have a few options:

  • Assign a Proxy: Find a trusted friend or roommate who can meet the movers on your behalf. You can officially designate a proxy by emailing us at hillsdalestorageforstudents@gmail.com
  • Reschedule: You may reschedule your pickup for a different day at no additional cost if done at least 5 business days before your original pickup date.
  • Last-Minute Rescheduling: If you need to reschedule within 5 business days of your pickup, an additional fee will apply.

Important: Do NOT leave your belongings unattended outside your room, in a hallway, or in the lobby. StorageForStudents is not responsible for any lost or stolen items left unattended.

For security and privacy reasons, we cannot disclose the exact location of our storage facility or allow customer access. Rest assured, your items are carefully stored and will be delivered back to you as scheduled!

Are the storage facilities pest-controlled or air-conditioned?

Yes! We only partner with storage facilities that follow strict pest control protocols to ensure the safety of your belongings.

Our facilities are also climate-controlled, meaning they maintain steady temperatures and humidity levels—typically between 55 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit—to protect against mold, mildew, and extreme temperature fluctuations.

If you have an item that requires special care, please reach out to us via our email! We’ll do our best to accommodate your needs!

Storage insurance?

We take great care in handling and storing your belongings, but in the rare event of loss or damage, each item is covered by our complimentary $100 insurance. To ensure your items are properly covered, please reach out to us via our email. This will be when you can select your desired insurance coverage.

Important Notes:

  • TVs and monitors must be packed in their original box or a TV-specific box to qualify for any insurance coverage. If left unboxed, insurance will be forfeited.
  • Unprotected mattresses and mattress pads that are damaged will also forfeit all insurance coverage, even if additional coverage was purchased.

For any insurance-related questions, feel free to contact us via our email!

Can you store my vehicle?

For safety and logistical reasons, StorageForStudents does not store any vehicles, including cars, trucks, or motorcycles within the storage facilities. The storage services are specifically designed for personal items such as furniture, boxes, and other household goods. Storing vehicles could pose various risks such as fuel leaks, fire hazards, and obstructing space, which is why we are unable to accommodate such requests.

If you need storage for your vehicle, we recommend looking for specialized vehicle storage facilities that offer secure, climate-controlled environments for cars and other vehicles. These facilities are better equipped to handle the safety needs of your vehicle while providing proper space and care.

We apologize for the inconvenience and encourage you to contact us for help with your other storage needs!

Will I be able to pick up from the storage facility?

For safety and logistical reasons, students or parents are not permitted to pick up their belongings directly from the storage facility. Our services are designed to provide convenient and efficient delivery options to your requested location, ensuring that your items are safely transported to where you need them.

This policy is in place to maintain a smooth and organized operation, as well as to prioritize the security of your belongings. By offering delivery directly to your doorstep, we can ensure that everything is handled properly and with care.

If you require access to your items sooner than expected, please contact our customer service team via email, and we will assist you in arranging a delivery at your convenience.
